What are Gutter Guards?
By ProMatcher Staff
My gutters are always getting clogged. Do gutter guards really work?
Gutter guards (or covers) are designed to keep gutters free of leaves, debris, and other matter. If leaves are allowed to accumulate in the gutters, water cannot freely pass through them and the overflow may begin to seep into your house. Gutter guards help to protect your home from this type of water damage.
Gutter guards will not eliminate the need to clean your gutters, but it will reduce the number of times that you need to clean your gutters. Although some brands of gutter guards claim to be “clog-free” or “maintenance-free”, you should still periodically inspect the gutters to make sure they are free of leaves and debris.
Types of Gutter Guards
There are several different types of gutter guards. Although there are many varieties available, there are three basic types. For example:
1. Reverse Curve Covers
- Use surface tension to allow water into the cover - Curve acts as a hood to keep debris out
2. Gutter Screens
- Filter out debris and allow water into the gutter - Mirco-mesh covers keep out the most debris - Heavy rain can be a problem
3. Gutter Fillers
- Keep debris out of the gutter by blocking access - Water passes through the filler and the debris rests on top - Gutter (or hedgehog) brush allows water through bristles - Foam gutter guards allow water through sponge-like surface
